It’s Scam Awareness month, and it’s about creating a self-supporting network of confident and alert business and consumers.

So as a business what risks do you face and what can you do to protect yourself from serious financial and reputational damage as a result of a scam?

The top 3 scams that business are targeted with are Phishing – email scams trying to get personal and financial information from you, Spear Phishing – using personalised communication, made to look like it is from someone you know, to trick you into giving away personal and financial information, and Malware Attacks – an umbrella term for software applications such as trojans, worms, viruses, spyware, ransomware, root kits,12 key loggers, browser hijackers etc.

Protect your business, your customers and your computer! 

  • Make sure your customers know when you want payment and how you take payment. Always provide a clear quote, with your full business details.
  • If your customers are paying online, advise them to phone you and check they have the correct bank details before making payment.

Always regularly update antivirus software on computers and laptops and change passwords regularly

The European Food Safety Authority


The European Food Safety Authority are offering a free application checking service to make feed additive and novel food applications easier for small to medium sized businesses. The new novel food legislation will be fully in force in January 2018.


The Queens Speech


The Queens Speech
on 21 June proposed changes to the following legislation:

·         Travel Protection Bill will include improved protection for holiday makers and will cover the online travel market.

·         Draft Tenants’ Fees Bill covers a ban on some letting fees and recovery of unlawful fees

·         Good Mortgages Bill repeals the Bills of Sale Acts and brings in protection and help for borrowers who get into difficulty. It will provide protection for innocent 3rd parties who buy a vehicle with outstanding log book loan.

Low Carbon Kent


Low Carbon Kent have refreshed their Steps To Environmental Management (STEM) scheme to help businesses get up to speed and promote their environmental credentials. The next fully-funded workshop is set for the 9th August in Sevenoaks and Silver (follow on) course on the 16th August in Ashford. They lead to recognised accreditations (aligned to ISO14001) and help with tendering and marketing.  Well worth half a day’s attendance!
